Part 7
Roadmap: how to learn watercolor from scratch
Sharing my personal experience!
  • Let me clarify one thing right away:
    I’m talking about my style

    About watercolor sketching ❤️
    —not classical painting 🤪

I’ll break down the difference between painting and sketching in detail another time

For now, here’s a very short explanation of why I chose sketching:
    ■ I’m a fashion designer, not a fine artist.
I need to draw my ideas, not copy references.
(In traditional painting techniques, that’s extremely difficult!)
    Plus:
    ■ Sketching is faster.
What takes 30 minutes in a sketch
can easily turn into 2 hours in painting.

Why I recommend starting your watercolor journey with sketching

    ■ Sketching is easier to learn and less demanding technically.
You can reach a confident level in 1–2 weeks
(with painting, you can’t even dream of timelines like that).

    ■ An untrained viewer can’t tell the difference
between good sketching and good painting.
Thanks to modern brushes, paper, paints, colored pencils, and markers for that —
and a special thank you for the fact that we no longer have to use egg yolks in drawing 😄

    ■ Sketching is about logic, not “magical talent,”
    not about “feeling the paint.”

Okay, I hope I’ve inspired you to start your romance with watercolor through sketching.
If not… well, your loss 😅

    The roadmap
Alright. Take a look at these sketches of mine 👇
  • Everything you see in my sketches is made using one simple algorithm:
    1️⃣ Base color layer
    2️⃣ Shadows
    3️⃣ Detailing

    This same algorithm works for:
    ■ fabrics
    ■ hair
    ■ complex textures
    ■ light textures
    ■ transparent, vinyl, fluffy textures
Basically, everything is built with the same logic.
The structure is always the same.

    Can you learn this?
    Yes!

    How?
You need to do two things:
1️⃣Master the techniques you need for watercolor sketching.
It can feel a bit boring at first — but the results are wow.

2️⃣Understand and truly “live through” the logic of the algorithm.
It’s not enough to just know the steps.
You need to paint 10–20 looks step by step
so you start understanding textures —
and how to break any texture down into these simple steps on your own.

Okay! So what techniques do you need to master?
Let’s walk through the algorithm again.

Step 1. Apply the base layer. You need to understand:
    ■ how to prepare your paints for work
    ■ how to choose tools and materials so you’re not disappointed with the result
    ■ how to mix paint with water
    ■ how to control color intensity on paper
    ■ how much paint to load on the brush
    ■ how to apply it to the paper
    ■ how to remove excess paint
    ■ how long to let the paint dry
    ■ how to fix mistakes in your wash
    ■ how to

Step 2. Add shadows. It’s important to understand:
    ■ how and where shadows are placed
    ■ what color to use for shadows
    ■ how colors behave when layered
    ■ how to mix different shades

Step 3. Add details. This is the most important part.
Because without details, sketches often look like a total fail 👇
  • What’s important to understand
    ■ what kind of detailing is actually appropriate
    ■ how to render textures through details
    ■ which details are essential — and which are optional
    ■ which details are done with watercolor, and which with other tools
    ■ what extra tools are worth using
    ■ how and with what to add highlights
    ■ how to use colored pencils
    ■ how to use liners
    ■ how to control contrast
    ■ how to add clarity and contrast to your drawing

After that, there are two possible paths:

1️⃣ Use GPT, YouTube, and Google
to search for answers to all of these “how” questions on your own.
2️⃣ Or join my course and get this system in a concentrated, structured form,
with my feedback on your mistakes along the way.
    Both paths work.
Choose the one that fits you best.
