FASHION SKETCHING COURSE
Patterns
In this lesson we will dive into how to add patterns on your sketch without overloading it
  • Style. I never draw a print in too much detail. I draw with relaxed, pale, careless lines
3 types of prints
  • If we divide all the patterns into types we'll get
    1, Repeating patterns
    2. Geometric patterns
    3. Abstract patters
    Let's go in order 👇🏻
1. Repeating patterns
  • It is based on one (or several) elements. For example, flower, polka dots, brand logo, hearts, fruit, etc.

Basic rule
  • Print elements (especially large ones) are trimmed in the folds of the fabric and on the sides of the body
Let's draw them together
2. Geometric patterns
  • It is based on vertical, horizontal and diagonal lines
  • These lines curve as well as the hems and body silhouette
Let's draw them together
Slim plaid dress
  • Horizontal stripes repeat the hemlines. Verticals repeat curves of the body
Straight grid check pants
  • Horizontal stripes repeat the hemlines. Verticals repeat curves of the body
Flared houndstooth pants
  • In order to draw such a print - first map out all the lines as we did it in previous pants. Then draw hatches at the intersections
Slim glen check jacket
  • Stripes on the lapels usually have another direction
Straight tartan jacket
  • When drawing a loose peice - it's okay to draw straight stripes
3. Abstract patterns
  • These prints are made of abstract non-repeating elements. The most striking examples are animal prints
  • There are no rules at all, we just imitate the print. Since it's chaotic, it can overlap any way
Let's draw them together
