• Hello fashionistas!

Today we're going to figure out ways to make money from fashion illustrating

I will describe the main ways, talk about their advantages and disadvantages, and also share some nuances

I'm writing my thoughts in a flow state (without editing them)..... So, sorry for so many words
1
Method. Blogging
  • What you need to do: just draw, just publish your work in social networks, just place ads (related to your topic), and just get paid for it

Profitability 💵 I get $1-3 for each click on any link in my accounts

    PROS
    • It is very easy
    • Suitable even for total beginners (even if you have zero level!)

    CONS
    • It brings in the least amount of money

❤️ I would recommend using this method when learning to draw. If you do it correctly, you'll earn a little more in a year of learning fashion sketching than you put into your learning and art supplies. In addition, you will gain subscribers and experience

2
Method. Event illustration
  • What you need to do: you come to the events and draw fashion sketches of guests

    Profitability 💵 I charge $500-1000 for 1 event

    PROS
    • The most profitable at the initial stage
    • Easy to find clients
    • There are no professionalism requirements, you can draw even "children's drawings" - the main thing is to do it in a one unique style

    CONS
    • It's a regular job. You are still exchanging your time for money

Clear instruction on what to do and how to do it - available in my course. In the commercial fashion illustration module, I go into detail on the topic. Sharing all thoughts, ideas and tricks
3
Method. Street fashion illustration
  • What you need to do: come to a tourist area and draw fashion sketches of tourists

Profitability 💵 I received $1000-1500 per day of work

    PROS
    • Very profitable at the initial stage
    • There are no professionalism requirements, you can draw even "children's drawings" - the main thing is to do it one unique style

    CONS
    • It's a regular job. You are still exchanging time for money
    • Not in all countries/cities the situation with laws/criminals allows to conduct such activity legally and safely

Method. Selling illustrations to your fans (to people who cares about fashion and style)
  • What you need to do: you draw whatever you want. You take photos, process them, make merches and put them up for sale in online shops/platforms

Profitability 💵 I haven't done this seriously yet. But @hnicholsillustration has made almost 60,000 sales of its fashion illustrations on etsy. Which equates to about $1.5 million in revenue (estimates are rough, I don't know the exact figures)

    PROS
    • You do creative work. You draw whatever and whenever you want

    CONS
    • As long as you have a small fanbase, there won't be many sales

In this tutorial I won't be able to tell you how and what to do correctly. But I will tell you about many nuances, because of which I do not engage in this type of activity. But trust me! It's also very interesting!

Method. Selling illustrations to companies
  • What you need to do: you draw whatever you want. Them take picture of your drawing, process it and put your art for sale on the stocks

Profitability 💵 I have not used this method of earning, but I know artists with an income of $8000 per month

    PROS
    • You do creative work. You draw whatever you want

    CONS
    • To reach a decent income, you need to achieve popularity on the stock (This is the same as popularity in social networks, but on the stocks)
    • This method will soon have to compete with neural networks

There won't be any information on this method on the course either 😆 Because I don't know much about this topic (other than what it is)
6
Method. Collaborating with brands. This is my love and my recommendation!!! ❤️
  • What you need to do: you draw illustrations commissioned by a brand or clothing shop

Profitability 💵 I charge from 100 to 500 per illustration

  • What you need to do: teach others to draw

    Profitability 💵 I earn about $2000 a month

    PROS
    • You are bringing value to people and world
    • The successes of students are very inspiring
    • By teaching others you're progressing as well

    CONS
    • Very high demands on professionalism
    • Failure of students leads to emotional burnout and depression

Method. Selling artworks
  • What you have to do: you draw an illustration and sell the original

Profitability 💵 At the moment I'm just planning to start drawing 1 interior wall painting every month. I will sell at auction once a month. The starting price will be $1000

    PROS
    • 100% creativity! Complete freedom of self-realisation! We draw only what we want
    • Big cheques for each illustration

    CONS
    • High professionalism is required
    • To destroy the work you already dislike, you will have to buy it back 😐 or steal it 😂

    Nuances
    • It's a long term investment. Generally, works can be sold over the next six months
    • Some works will be sold over the next several years (3, 5, 10...)
